Get back to nature
Dunkeld is located at the southern end of the Grampians National Park, which is renowned for its scenic beauty, bushwalking trails, and wildlife. Take your pick of hikes, mountains to climb, or simply take a stroll keeping an eye out for kangaroos, emus, and other local animals in their natural habitat.
Explore the Dunkeld Arboretum
The Dunkeld Arboretum is a sanctuary of nature featuring a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and other plants. You can take a stroll through the natural oasis (2km return) and learn about the different species of plants that are native to the area.
Stock up on tasty supplies
It wouldn't be a visit to Dunkeld without dropping into The Dunkeld Old Bakery, which has been operating out of this same building since the 1860s. Explore the bakery, learn about its history, and sample some of the delicious bread, pastries, and cakes that are baked on site.
Another gem in the heart of Dunkeld is the Dunkeld General Store, with its ever-growing range of groceries, gourmet produce, great coffee, and local produce. Store owners, the Fields have farmed in the Victoria Valley for some time and know the region and farming scene well. They even provide their own line of garments, Lambykins, which offer a variety of wears made from local Western District wool.
Make a reservation to remember
Dunkeld is lucky enough to call home to two-hatted fine dining restaurant Wickens and casual diner Parker Street Project, both part of the Royal Mail Hotel — it wouldn't be a trip to Dunkeld without a bite to eat or drink at the RMH where you can sample gourmet meals, local wines, and craft beers while taking in the scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
History to uncover
Dunkeld has a story to be told, which you will discover by visiting the Dunkeld and District Historical Museum. From a growing farming town to devastation by bushfire, learn all about Dunkeld's past and take in the sites on foot using the Dunkeld Heritage Trail. The trail is a great way to stretch the legs and gain insight into the historic buildings, providing a glimpse into the town's past and its significance in the development of western Victoria.
