How to spend a weekend in Dunkeld, Victoria

This is a subtitle for y our new post

Under the watchful height of the towering peaks of Mt Abrupt (Mud-Dadjug ) and Mt Sturgeon (Wurgarri), quietly sits the township of Dunkeld — urging you to slow down and just take it all in.

Dunkeld is a quaint and picturesque town located at the southern tip of the Grampians National Park —250km north-west of Melbourne. It offers both natural beauty with a long and rich history. The township itself boasts several historic buildings and sites, providing a glimpse into the region's past. Additionally, Dunkeld's thriving culinary scene is sure to satisfy any food lover's cravings.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or foodie, Dunkeld has something to offer everyone. Here's how to spend your time simply taking it all in.

Get back to nature

Dunkeld is located at the southern end of the Grampians National Park, which is renowned for its scenic beauty, bushwalking trails, and wildlife. Take your pick of hikes, mountains to climb, or simply take a stroll keeping an eye out for kangaroos, emus, and other local animals in their natural habitat.

Explore the Dunkeld Arboretum

The Dunkeld Arboretum is a sanctuary of nature featuring a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and other plants. You can take a stroll through the natural oasis (2km return) and learn about the different species of plants that are native to the area.

Stock up on tasty supplies

It wouldn't be a visit to Dunkeld without dropping into The Dunkeld Old Bakery, which has been operating out of this same building since the 1860s. Explore the bakery, learn about its history, and sample some of the delicious bread, pastries, and cakes that are baked on site.

Another gem in the heart of Dunkeld is the Dunkeld General Store, with its ever-growing range of groceries, gourmet produce, great coffee, and local produce. Store owners, the Fields have farmed in the Victoria Valley for some time and know the region and farming scene well. They even provide their own line of garments, Lambykins, which offer a variety of wears made from local Western District wool.

Make a reservation to remember

Dunkeld is lucky enough to call home to two-hatted fine dining restaurant Wickens and casual diner Parker Street Project, both part of the Royal Mail Hotel — it wouldn't be a trip to Dunkeld without a bite to eat or drink at the RMH where you can sample gourmet meals, local wines, and craft beers while taking in the scenic views of the surrounding countryside.

Some places are just made for winter Some places are just made for winter. Frosty mornings and chilly nights. Star blanketed skies and foggy views in the distance. Made for crackling fires and winter wooly layers. Made for red wine (white wine, mulled wine) and hot-choccy treats. Made for lazy days in and adventurous days out. Made for warm bubble baths and cold water therapy. Some places, like Aquila Eco Lodges, are just made for winter. Well, we’re made for all year ‘round, but winter simply enchants the Southern Grampians. Here's why Aquila is your perfect winter getaway. All to yourself The cooler seasons mean a typically less busy season for international tourists, which means you can enjoy the beautiful natural attractions and wide open spaces, all-to-yourself. With space to play, walking trails to take up the entire width, waterfalls with no-one to spoil your photo and the best seat at the pub. Furry friends out to play Many of our adorable furry friend animals are more active during the cooler months in the Grampians. You have a better chance of spotting kangaroos, wallabies, and a variety of bird species particularly on the hundreds of acres of untouched property of Aquila Eco Lodges. The cooler weather also makes hiking and wildlife spotting more comfortable. Waterfall wonderland There's no doubt about it, the Grampian region’s waterfalls are at their most impressive during winter due to increased rainfall. Popular spots like Wannon Falls, Nigretta Falls, MacKenzie Falls, Silverband Falls and Fysh Falls offer spectacular views with strong, flowing water — which is exactly what you want from these stunning natural beasts. Perfect hiking weather The cooler temperatures can make hiking more enjoyable compared to the heat of summer. There are endless trails suitable for all levels of hikers, from easy walks to challenging hikes — some right on Aquila's property. Locally Mud-Dadjug (Mount Abrupt), Wurgarri (Mount Sturgeon) and Bainggug (The Piccaninny) and further out in the Grampians, The Pinnacle, Mount William, and Boroka Lookout are some popular hiking destinations with rewarding views. Cosy accommodation Nothing says cosy, comfy weekend away like a treehouse deep in nature . With your own fully equipped lodge, with fireplace, fluffy beds, couches to lounge on and day beds to, well, day bed on — you will be so warm and cosy you won't want to leave. Wine tastes better in winter Red wine, white wine, mulled wine – whatever your poison — there's something unmatched about a glass of your favourite drop, by a fireplace, rain falling on the roof, just heavenly. Whether you buy a bottle and just enjoy it at home, or drop into one of the many amazing wineries in the region, like Grampians Estate, Seppelt or Best's Wines — you will agree, that wine is just made for winter . Star gazing, sunrises and sunsets Winter in the Grampians region often brings clear, crisp nights, perfect for stargazing. The cooler air is less humid, resulting in better visibility of the night sky. It also offers numerous vantage points for breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. Sunsets in the Grampians during winter can be incredibly dramatic. The sky often displays a palette of vibrant colors, from deep oranges and reds to purples and pinks, reflecting off the rugged mountain terrain. See, we told you, some places are just made for winter — book your winter stay with Aquila .
